DESCRIPTION:Come grab a bowl of Howling Cow Ice Cream and join us for a talk in the AIF Seminar Series. Dr. Semen Gorfman\, senior lecturer at the Materials Science and Engineering department at Tel Aviv University\, will present time resolved x-ray diffraction for materials science (abstract below). The AIF Seminar Series is designed to be informal\, interactive\, and fun. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss science and network. \nPlease RSVP here by July 16\, 2018. \nTime-resolved X-ray diffraction for materials science\nAbstract \nX-ray crystallography is the versatile and rapidly developing area of natural science. While holding its intrinsic cross-disciplinary appeal\, it supplies invaluable characterization tools for solid-state physicists\, materials scientists\, chemists and biologist. While many methods of X-ray crystallography (as e.g. standard structure solution) are becoming routine\, the new generation synchrotron radiation sources and X-ray free electron lasers call for the rapid development time-resolved X-ray crystallography. This is relatively new branch of crystallography\, which is by far less established and which aims for the set of tools to access time-dependent changes of materials (micro-) structure under external perturbation. \nThis talk will highlight some synchrotron-based techniques of time-resolved X-ray diffraction and demonstrate how it helps to understand important functions of materials\, whose response to external perturbation underpins practically important physical properties. We will especially focus at the structural mechanisms of enhancement of piezoelectricity\, dielectricity and ferroelectricity – the properties\, which describe response of crystalline materials to the variation of external electric field on the microsecond and millisecond time scales. \nShort Biography \nDr. Semën Gorfman is the senior lecturer at the Materials Science and Engineering department at Tel Aviv University. He received his MSc in Physics from Chelyabinsk State University (Russia) and obtained PhD in Solid State Physics from the University of Siegen (Germany). In 2008-2011 he worked as a postdoc in the University of Warwick (United Kingdom)\, in  2011-2016 / 2016-2017 was a lecturer in the Universities of Siegen / Freiburg (Germany). His research interest and expertise span fundamental and X-ray crystallography\, physical properties of crystals\, piezoelectrics and ferroelectrics\, high-resolution X-ray diffraction and precise structure analysis\, in-situ X-ray diffraction studies of crystalline materials under external perturbation\, application of synchrotron radiation. The research of Dr Gorfman are frequently performed at central synchrotron radiation facilities as ESRF\, PETRA III and Diamond Light Source.

DESCRIPTION:This will be a hands-on short course on Ultramicrotomy for sample preparation. The course is a mixture of lectures and hands on demonstration. Each user will have the ability to prepare samples\, make a glass knife for cutting\, trim a block\, and section a sample. The course is designed to allow students to understand the capabilities of the Ultramicrotme and its limits. SUMMARY:SEM Short Course
DESCRIPTION:We offer a hands-on short course on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) on a routine basis. In addition to two lectures on SEM theory\, each student will get hands-on time running the AIF variable pressure SEM (VPSEM). The goal of the course is to provide students a basic knowledge of both the theory and practice of SEM imaging\, the data that can be derived thereof\, and to understand what the generated data means.  This should allow a student who successfully completes the course to operate any SEM with minimal training. By the end of the day\, the students should be able to operate the VPSEM without assistance. SUMMARY:(CANCELLED) X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Short Course
DESCRIPTION:This introductory XRD short course will cover basic principles of X-ray diffraction\, operation of diffractometers in Bragg-Brentano geometry (typically used for powders)\, and basic phase identification. It is meant for first-time XRD users and/or those interested in learning phase identification and pattern matching in HighScore software. The course will include 1 hour theory component\, 1 hour of phase identification training in the AIF Data Analysis center\, and 1-3 hours of a practical component in the XRD lab (as needed). After completion of this course and the EH&S course on Analytical X-ray Safety\, attendees will be able to independently operate a diffractometer in basic mode. In order to facilitate authorization to use the equipment\, participants are encouraged to take the Analytical X-ray Safety offered by EH&S (see details here for this information and other requirements to gain future access to the instruments). SUMMARY:SEM Short Course
DESCRIPTION:The goal for the day is to learn the basics of SEM theory and SEM operation so that you can apply that knowledge to analyzing your own samples and/or understanding what SEM data means. Please note that a short course is designed to teach you how the technique works\, the data that can be derived thereof\, and what the generated data means. Training is designed to teach you the operational specifics of a particular instrument. Assuming that all is well you should be able to drive the Hitachi S-3200N SEM more or less independently by the end of the day. That said\, it is not unusual for users to request additional training for a particular instrument. \nWe will start with an introduction lecture to SEM after which we will move to the lab. In the first lab\, the student will observe a demonstration of SEM operation.  Then each of you will drive the microscope on a standard sample and we will explore changing instrument conditions and the resulting effect on the data. During this phase\, we will also learn how to focus and correct astigmatism as well as how to properly set signal gain (contrast) and offset (brightness). After a break for lunch\, there will be another lecture where we learn more about electron beam-sample interactions\, detectors\, how to pick imaging conditions\, etc. Then we will go to the lab where you can apply what you have learned by imaging any sample you wish. You are welcome to bring a sample for this time or I can find one that is appropriate. \nYou should bring something to write with and on\, a memory stick for the presentation and any data or other information that is electronic\, and last but certainly not least\, your brain. You can also bring a sample for hands-on time in the afternoon. We will take a short break for lunch\, probably on the order of 30-45 minutes\, so it might be smart to bring lunch with you. \nThis should be a relaxed and enjoyable day where you learn something fun and useful. Questions? DESCRIPTION:NCSU’s Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) is giving a hands-on short course on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS). This introductory course will cover basic principles of surface analysis and the two commonly used techniques XPS and ToF-SIMS including theory and applications. It is meant for those who are interested in surface analysis of both soft and hard materials. DESCRIPTION:NCSU’s Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) is giving a hands-on short course on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and related techniques\, which are very powerful to understand the morphology\, structure\, defects\, crystal orientation and phase information of materials\, as well as the chemical distribution down to atomic resolution. It is meant for new TEM users with an interdisciplinary background and/or those interested in learning advanced characterization techniques. SUMMARY:Raman Spectroscopy Tutorial
DESCRIPTION:Raman Spectroscopy has gained much attention in the past 25 years as a material analytics and diagnostics method\, often used as a complement to diffraction or electron microscopy techniques. This interest is triggered by Raman being a (mostly) non-destructive measurement that can be obtained with easy-to-use\, tabletop equipment. The Raman signal is a type of inelastic scattering from molecular or crystal vibrations\, and as such it is a fingerprint of the state the solid assumes. Any changes in composition\, phase\, mechanical properties (among others) would in fact leave a trace in the Raman spectral signature. Despite its potential and versatility\, however\, the Raman technique is not as widespread as diffraction methods\, mostly due to difficulties in data interpretation. This lecture uncovers most practical and critical aspects of Raman spectroscopy\, and presents the ample possibilities offered by Raman for the most variate analyses in materials science. The aim of this lecture is to discuss the criticalities and to convey the advantages of Raman spectroscopy to a wider audience in materials science. \nThe course is organized as follows:  \nThe theory of Raman spectroscopy is first detailed\, focusing on the identification and assignment of Raman vibrations. Then\, information on Raman spectroscopic equipment and their working principles is given\, including details on spectral fitting procedures. Finally\, the course is completed by several examples of application of Raman spectroscopy on ceramic\, semiconductor and polymeric samples. \nFor the demonstration\, Marco will do three measurements:  \n(i) detection of the ferroelectric-paraelectric transition in barium titanate\, (ii) mapping of monoclinic content in zirconia\, (iii) mapping of pharmaceutical tablets. \nUsers can bring their own samples- please let us know what type of sample(s) you will bring in the registration form. \nJanuary 29th – Lectures  \nJanuary 30th – Hands-on activities  \nShort Bio \nMarco Deluca received a Master in Chemical Engineering from the University of Trieste (Italy) and a Ph. D. in Materials Science from Kyoto Institute of Technology (Japan). He obtained in 2016 the Habilitation (venia docendi) in Materials Science from the Montanuniversität Leoben (Leoben\, Austria). The main theme of his scientific career is the study of structure-property relationships in functional oxide materials including ceramics and semiconductors for sensors/actuators\, energy harvesting/storage and gas sensing applications. He is a member of the IEEE\, of the American Ceramic Society and member of the Board of Directors of the Austrian Ceramic Society. He authored/co-authored more than 60 refereed publications in journals and conferences and two book chapters\, and gave more than 20 invited presentations to international conferences and workshops. SUMMARY:SEM Short Course
DESCRIPTION:We offer a hands-on short course on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) on a routine basis. In addition to two lectures on SEM theory\, each student will get hands-on time running the AIF variable pressure SEM (VPSEM). The goal of the course is to provide students a basic knowledge of both the theory and practice of SEM imaging\, the data that can be derived thereof\, and to understand what the generated data means.  This should allow a student who successfully completes the course to operate any SEM with minimal training. By the end of the day\, the students should be able to operate the VPSEM without assistance. SUMMARY:X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Short Course
DESCRIPTION:This introductory XRD short course will cover basic principles of X-ray diffraction\, operation of diffractometers in Bragg-Brentano geometry (typically used for powders)\, and basic phase identification. It is meant for first-time XRD users and/or those interested in learning phase identification and pattern matching in HighScore software. The course will include 1 hour theory component\, 1 hour of phase identification training in the AIF Data Analysis center\, and 1-3 hours of a practical component in the XRD lab (as needed). After completion of this course and the EH&S course on Analytical X-ray Safety\, attendees will be able to independently operate a diffractometer in basic mode. In order to facilitate authorization to use the equipment\, participants are encouraged to take the Analytical X-ray Safety offered by EH&S (see details here for this information and other requirements to gain future access to the instruments).
