In addition to two lectures on SEM theory\, each student will get hands-on time running the AIF variable pressure SEM (VPSEM). The goal of the course is to provide students a basic knowledge of both the theory and practice of SEM imaging\, the data that can be derived thereof\, and to understand what the generated data means.  This should allow a student who successfully completes the course to operate any SEM with minimal training. By the end of the day\, the students should be able to operate the VPSEM without assistance. SUMMARY:AIF Cool Science Seminar Series: Dr. Roland Brunner
DESCRIPTION:Come grab a bowl of Howling Cow Ice Cream and join us for a talk in the AIF Seminar Series. Dr. Roland Brunner\, group leader at the Materials Center Leoben\, Forschung GmbH (MCL)\, will present 3D imaging methods and quantitative analysis for advanced material science (abstract below). The AIF Seminar Series is designed to be informal\, interactive\, and fun. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss science and network. \nPlease RSVP here by August 5\, 2019. \n3D Imaging Methods and Quantitative Analysis for Advanced Material Science \nAbstract \nA rapidly developing area in material science displays the three-dimensional characterization of the microstructure using tomography based imaging methods. The use of quantified 3D structural information offers new possibilities with respect to an improved understanding about the correlation between microstructure and functionality as well as for more advanced material designs.  In this context\, several experimental approaches like X-ray computed tomography\, X-ray microscopy\, SEM/FIB-tomography or synchrotron 3D imaging represent highly powerful techniques. Here\, important key parameters display the possible resolution as well as achievable contrast. Another challenge comprises the quantification of the 3D image data. However\, a critical analysis is seldom undertaken. \nIn this talk\, I will discuss the use of different 3D imaging techniques for the investigation of novel material concepts e.g. suitable for energy storage applications or microelectronics. This will particularly cover a discussion regarding the correlation between microstructure and material e.g. electrical\, mechanical or electrochemical material properties. Further\, I will present an image analysis workflow suitable for material characterization. This workflow comprises the (1) pre-processing e.g. artefact reduction and image quality improvement\, (2) segmentation e.g. particles\, pores\, etc. as well as the (3) post-processing of the data e.g. the quantification of the pore network behavior\, particle\, or the use of FEM simulations in combination with 3D image data. \nShort Biography \nDr. Roland Brunner is a group leader at the Materials Center Leoben\, Forschung GmbH (MCL)\, lecturer at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben\,and coopted at the PhD school for Physics at faculty of natural science\, University Graz. He holds a PhD in Material/Semiconductor physics. From 2006 to 2012 he was a Postdoc at the University Leoben and Japan\, NTT & Tokyo University dealing with Electron Spin based Quantum Information in semiconductors. In addition\, he was a short term researcher at Chiba University\, Japan\, as well as the Electrical Engineering Department at ASU\, USA. He has been at the MCL since 2012. In 2014 he made his postdoctoral lecture qualification and was appointed to Priv. Doz. He has been a leader of the micro- and nanostructure visualization group since 2018. His research interests span the further development of 2D/3D imaging methods as well as image analysis approaches for industrial relevant material- and failure -characterization. Experimental methods comprises e.g. acoustic microscopy\, or tomography based methods like SEM/FIB-\, X-ray- computed as well as synchrotron 3D imaging.

DESCRIPTION:NCSU’s Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) is giving a hands-on short course on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS). This introductory course will cover basic principles of surface analysis and the two commonly used techniques XPS and ToF-SIMS including theory and applications. It is meant for those who are interested in surface analysis of both soft and hard materials. SUMMARY:X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Short Course
DESCRIPTION:This introductory XRD short course will cover basic principles of X-ray diffraction\, operation of diffractometers in Bragg-Brentano geometry (typically used for powders)\, and basic phase identification. It is meant for first-time XRD users and/or those interested in learning phase identification and pattern matching in HighScore software. The course will include 1 hour theory component\, 1 hour of phase identification training in the AIF Data Analysis center\, and 1-3 hours of a practical component in the XRD lab (as needed). After completion of this course and the EH&S course on Analytical X-ray Safety\, attendees will be able to independently operate a diffractometer in basic mode. In order to facilitate authorization to use the equipment\, participants are encouraged to take the Analytical X-ray Safety offered by EH&S (see details here for this information and other requirements to gain future access to the instruments). DESCRIPTION:Hosted by CAMECA Instruments\nAtom Probe Tomography (APT) is the highest special resolution analytical characterization technique with high efficiency single atom detection for quantitative atom scale 3D compositional analysis and elemental mapping of chemical heterogeneities.  This talk will cover APT operational theory\, an introduction to sample prep and data reconstruction\, and an overview of various applications.  A commercial cryo-UHV solution for FIB-APT specimen transfer will also be presented which expands the application space for APT to biological materials\, hydrogen containing materials\, and surfaces prone to rapid oxidation. \nLunch will be included with registration. \nRSVP HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Kalinin\, A Material Opportunity: How Microscopy and Autonomous Experimentation Can Accelerate Materials Design\n\nAffiliation: The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences\, Oak Ridge National Laboratories\, Oak Ridge\, TN\n  \n  \n\nA Material Opportunity: How Microscopy and Autonomous Experimentation Can Accelerate Materials Design\nMaterials discovery\, optimization\, and design is one of the major challenges facing civilization in the XXI century. This problem is equivalent to search in the extremely high dimensional chemical space\, the task for which the machine learning and artificial intelligence methods are uniquely suited. However\, unlike typical ML problems\, this space is essentially non-differentiable\, the cost functions are not always accessible due to lack of forward theories\, and practically we seek outliers more then average behaviors. Hence\, the potential of the classical correlative machine learning tools is limited. It can be argued that the presence of parsimonious physical mechanisms can allow effective navigation and extrapolation in chemical space. In this talk\, I will present the new opportunities enabled by physics-informed big data and machine learning technologies to extract physical information from static and dynamic STEM images. I will further illustrate how this data can be used to develop correlative models for solid structures on the atomic level\, and further elucidate generative physics. These approaches allow to recover effective pairwise and many body interactions directly from imaging data. Synergy of deep learning image analytics and real-time feedback further allows harnessing beam-induced atomic and bond dynamics to enable direct atom-by-atom fabrication. Examples of direct atomic motion over mesoscopic distances\, engineered doping at selected lattice site\, and assembly of multiatomic structures will be demonstrated. Finally\, I will share initial results on implementation of image-based feedback on SPM and STEM platforms\, opening the pathway for automated experimentation with microscopy. These advances position STEM and SPM towards transition from purely imaging tool for atomic-scale laboratory of electronic\, phonon\, and quantum phenomena in mesoscale and atomically-engineered structures. \nBiography\nSergei Kalinin is the director of the Institute for Functional Imaging of Materials (IFIM) and distinguished staff member at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He received his MS degree from Moscow State University in 1998 and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (with Dawn Bonnell) in 2002. \nHis research presently focuses on the applications of big data and artificial intelligence methods in atomically resolved imaging by scanning transmission electron microscopy and scanning probes\, as well as mesoscopic studies of electromechanical and transport phenomena via scanning probe microscopy. \nSergei has co-authored >600 publications\, with a total citation of >30\,000 and an h-index of >85. He is a fellow of MRS\, APS\, IoP\, IEEE\, Foresight Institute\, and AVS; a recipient of the RMS medal for Scanning Probe Microscopy (2015); Blavatnik Award for Physical Sciences (2018)\, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) (2009); Burton medal of Microscopy Society of America (2010); 4 R&D100 Awards (2008\, 2010\, 2016\, and 2018); and a number of other distinctions.

This introductory course will cover basic principles of surface analysis and the two commonly used techniques XPS and ToF-SIMS including theory and applications.
