During the Covid-19 outbreak, the Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) continues to offer online instrument training in practical SEM imaging.  The online component (Part 1 of the entire short course) will be offered as remote learning and will present essential theory and practical operations of the SEM equipment.  The goal is to provide students with the basic knowledge of the practical theory of SEM imaging, the data that can be derived thereof, and to understand what the generated data means.  This should allow a student to minimize training needed before operating any SEM.  Two courses will be offered where both courses will first focus on the theory of SEM operation.  The difference will be that one course will have practical information on operating AIF’s conventional thermal emitter SEM (VPSEM) and one will have practical information on operating AIF’s ultra-high resolution, low voltage capable SEM (Verios).  Contact Chuck Mooney (cbmooney@ncsu.edu) to discuss your future sample analysis needs and determine which one you should choose.  Users who take Part 1 of the instrument training will be prioritized for the in-lab training component (Part 2) once the university resumes on-campus research activites.  The hands-on lab section (Part 2) will utilize standard rates for on-campus short courses ($50 for students and researchers with federal or state funding).  Upon successful completion of the hands-on session the student should have the skills necessary for independent operation of the VPSEM.  For the independent operation of the Verios SEM, a follow up one-on-one training session will be required.
